Downtown Event Centre Keys Officially Given To City, SMG Canada

SMG Canada and the City of Moncton were officially given the keys to the brand new Downtown Event Centre Tuesday.

General Manager Nick DeLuco says the staff is excited to start working in their offices within the centre.

He says discussions for naming rights are still underway, but the plan is to have a deal in place for September.

“It totally varies, it depends on the term, it depends on what you’re looking to do in the building, outside the building,” says DeLuco. “You can have a look around at a lot of naming rights deals in the area, so you can kinda see what we’re looking at price wise.”

DeLuco was asked if there was something unique about this construction project, compared to others on which he has worked.

“We got to work on the project with the builder, which is awesome,” says DeLuco. “You can tailor this building to things that work at different events, and working with Bird [Construction] and those guys, and the City has been fantastic.”

“Being able to walk into a building you know exactly how everything works is just fantastic for all of us,” continued DeLuco.

He was asked about new shows that couldn’t have gone to the Coliseum.

“Keith Urban is probably one you wouldn’t have seen here had we not come down to this building,” responds DeLuco. “So those bigger shows with lots of rigging and all that stuff, those are shows you’re going to see here that you might not have seen in the past.”

Mayor Dawn Arnold says there will be a public open house at the beginning of September to allow anyone to come visit the centre.
