Atlantica Centre For Energy Pleased With Modular Reactor Discussion

The latest nuclear cluster announcements made this week are getting a thumbs up from the Atlantica Centre for Energy.

Colleen Mitchell says it bodes well for New Brunswick to have two companies looking to construct modular nuclear reactors in the Point Lepreau area.

“This is a terrific opportunity for New Brunswick to look at what do we have a competitive advantage with respect to energy,” says Mitchell. “This is certainly something that’s a really good fit for New Brunswick, for Saint John, and quite frankly for the energy industry.”

Mitchell says the Saint John area is indeed an energy hub and, after one of this week’s announcements, pointed out several examples.

“We have a thermal plant at Coleson Cove, we have a nuclear power plant, we have a natural gas plant at Bayside, we have an oil refinery, we an oil pipeline and two natural gas pipelines,” she says.

“The rest of the world would be in envy to think about the energy infrastructure that we have.

Although Mitchell is pleased with these long-term plans for nuclear energy, she also says there’s shale gas right under our feet that could be developed a lot sooner.
