Magnetic Hill Zoo Keeps Close Eye On Animals During Heat Wave

On really hot days, don’t be surprised if you don’t see all of the animals in their outdoor enclosures at the Magnetic Hill Zoo.

Heat can affect animals in the same way it affects humans.

Zoo director Jill Marvin says they keep a close eye on the animals to make sure they have what they need.

“We provide them extra ways (to get) moisture. So they are given extra bowls, they are given popsicles, they are given access all the time to their indoor enclosures,” she says.

Marvin says the zookeepers know the animals well and will notice any changes to their behaviour such as whether or not they are panting too much in the heat.
