Longtime Moncton Business Owner Recovering After Cancer Diagnosis

A long time business in the City of Moncton has closed temporarily, due to illness.

Barry Johnson is the Owner of Johnson Physiotherapy, which is located in the North end of the city. Along with his wife, Kathryn, they’ve helped a lot of clients over almost 20 years in business.

He was recently diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Ampullary cancer. It affects an area at the end of the bile duct from the gall bladder where it enters the small intestine. He underwent extensive surgery and will have to begin chemotherapy once he has healed from the surgery, but he has no details at this point.

This has been a major blow to the Johnson Family. Just a year and a half ago, his wife Kathryn went through a similar experience, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“Having her own cancer journey and surviving that, and the hardship that has given them. They both work in the same business together, and that is their only source of income. This is truly devastating on a lot of different levels,” Tobi Marr says.

Marr is a friend of the family, who has set up a Go Fund me page for the family. It is proof that this family has touched a lot of lives, because over $10,000 was raised in just 24 hours. Donations are still needed, with the hopes of raising $20,000.

Terri Trites knows the family well, and is also a client of Barry’s, “As Barry’s patient, I had two different surgeries. He was very concerned before the surgery, and after surgery that I did what I had to do to ensure that I had a good outcome.”

Both Barry and his wife Kathryn have always had a smile and a few kind words for their many clients who are dealing with pain and need rehabilitation or physical therapy for their joints and muscles. Now their clients are giving back in this time of need.

“Given their circumstances, the concern for their patients, it was so hard for them to close and not have a replacement for Barry. This Go Fund Me page is going to make a huge difference.”

In a statement on the Go Fund Me page, Barry says, “On behalf of Kathryn and our family, I would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of support. We cannot fully express to you how touched we are by your generous giving and words of comfort and support.”

There is no word how long Barry’s recovery will take.
