Burst Sprinkler Pipe Forces Nursing Home Residents Out

Officials at Briarlea Nursing Home in Moncton are hoping to have residents return to the centre soon, after water damage forced an evacuation yesterday.

In an email from a Spokesperson for the Centre, Charline Johnson told us, “Unfortunately, a sprinkler pipe burst due to the weather in the front sunroom at The Briarlea, which resulted in our emergency evacuation plan being activated. The main water valve was turned off, however, a significant amount of water had accumulated in a few sections of our home. As a result, the Fire Marshall requested that approximately 20 residents be evacuated as a precautionary measure.”

Moncton Fire responded to the home on Briarlea Drive. Temperatures were around minus 26 with the windchill at the time.

“We are very appreciative to everyone involved. Ability Transit also assisted with transportation,” Johnson stated in her email.

The Restoration company was on site last night , and Johnson says they confirmed that the damage was not as significant as originally thought.

“We will be working very closely tomorrow with the Restoration company and The FireMarshall, to make sure our residents can return home as soon as possible; hopefully tomorrow if all goes well.”
