Major Gift For Greater Moncton SPCA Will Help Alleviate Heating Woes

The Greater Moncton SPCA has received a post Christmas miracle.

Faced with costly repairs to its heating and electrical systems, Executive Director Dave Rogers says they received a major gift on Friday morning, thanks to the help of Black and MacDonald.

“Brad Linkletter informed me that they had contacted LG Canada, and they had agreed to provide the Greater Moncton SPCA , two top of the line mini-split heating systems, and that they will install them free of charge,” Rogers told us.

He adds, this will mean a savings on their heating bill, “If we are going to take 50 per cent of the workload off of the boiler system, we may save, and drop our bill from $8000 to $5500.”

Replacement of the boiler heating systems, that are around 30 years old, would have cost the shelter upwards of $50,000. Each emergency visit to do repairs to the boilers was costing around $800 each time they came out.

All of the savings can be used to towards a new shelter that they hope to open in 2019.

Mini- splits also have a cooling system, which will be beneficial in the summer.

“That’s something we have never had here at the shelter,” Rogers says.

The two mini-splits, combined with installation, have a value of over $20,000.

The mini-splits will be installed in the two larger rooms downstairs at the shelter. One will be put in the pound, which is where animals go to when they first arrive at the shelter as strays. The other one will be installed in the dog room, which is the largest room in the building.

“By putting the mini-splits in these two rooms, they should be able to effectively drop the requirement of the boiler by about 50 per cent. That should give the boilers enough chance to survive over the next couple of years running at 50 per cent capacity,” Rogers says.

They hope to have the mini-splits installed next week.

“The New Year started off tough for the SPCA. The first few days were really tough for us, but wow, today has made up for all of the headaches. This is just further proof that there are still good and giving people in the world,” Rogers says.
