The New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization is offering tips for today’s major winter storm.

Snowfall and high winds can cause white out conditions.

Spokesperson Danielle Elliott says it’s advised you stay put if you can, “If for some reason, it is an emergency and you must go out, be sure to check NB 511 for road conditions, and ensure your car has been properly de-iced. Drive slow and drive carefully.”

If you are out, and get stuck, ensure that your exhaust pipe is clear of snow, to ensure you are not poisoned by carbon monoxide.

In the case of a power outage in your home, ensure that you do not run generators in your house or in your garage, and have a carbon monoxide detector.

Emergency responders will be on alert today.as the storm passes through. They don’t have the luxury of going home, if a storm closes businesses and if vehicles are pulled off the road.

RCMP Corporal Julie Rogers-Marsh says with whiteout conditions possible, they also advise that you don’t venture out, “If the roads get very bad, and they haven’t been plowed, it may be difficult for us to get to where we need to go.”

For updates during the storm, you can follow the NB-EMO or RCMP NB on Twitter.
