Cold Weather Continues, Then Storm Expected On Thursday

If you were hoping for a break with the extreme cold temperatures today, there’s no good news in the forecast.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Jason Sheppard says temperatures still warrant bundling up before you head out again today, with the windchill conditions between minus 20 and minus 30 today.

These cold temperatures are expected to continue until Thursday, but that doesn’t mean Old Man Winter is going to give us a break from the season.

“We are monitoring a system that is approaching. It is on a Southerly track, aiming for somewhere between the Bay of Fundy right now, whereas the long range models are placing it as far East as Cape Breton. The good news is that the storm for New Brunswick, is going to pass just East of the province, but what that does mean is that the precipitation that is going to fall on Thursday, is going to fall predominantly as snow, and it should continue as snow. Southeasterly sections may see a little changeover to rain or freezing rain for an hour or two. We’re looking at early estimates of between 15 and 25 centimetres of snow, depending on how far east the storm tracks in the province,’ Sheppard says.

It is still in the early stages, and Sheppard says they continue to monitor it, “If the track moves just further West, we could be looking at higher snowfall amounts and stronger winds. If it tracks further East, we’ll be looking at less. We should know in the next day, a much clearer picture of what the storm will do. It is still a little early to pin things down.”

Sheppard expects if warnings are needed they could be issued later today or tomorrow.

Other weather forecasters, are currently predicting as much as 40 centimetres, with blizzard like conditions for our region.
