Rooming House Residents Find Shelter At House Of Nazareth

Several of the residents who were recently evicted from three rooming houses that are being torn down this week, have found shelter at the House of Nazareth in Moncton.

Shelter Coordinator Joe Leger says they have a total of 30 beds, 24 of them for men, and six for women.

He says they are a short term, emergency shelter, and their doors are open to anyone who has been displaced, “Part of our intake process is pointing someone in the right direction. When we determine when the end of a stay is, they are ready to move onto an apartment, or rooming house. There are a variety of places.”

A total of twelve residents were forced out of three homes on Gordon Street, due to safety concerns.

Leger says when it comes to banning evictions in cold weather, there are factors that have to be taken into consideration, “Is a residence safe enough to house someone during the the winter, or does it, under the firecode, pose a hazard to those staying”

Leger wouldn’t says how many of those who were evicted are staying at the shelter, but he did tell us, they are currently sitting at around 75 per cent capacity.
