Keep Your Pets Safe At Christmas Time

The festive season is here, but if you have a curious fur baby, there are things to take note of for their safety.

You may be planning to indulge in a turkey dinner on Christmas day. Director of Animal Welfare at the Greater Moncton SPCA Nanette Pearl says it’s not a good idea to share with your pet, “Don’t give your dog copious amounts of turkey at Christmas time, thinking that you are giving them a treat. It can run high risk of Pancreatitis and you’ll end up at the Vet.”

Pearl says there are other things that help to decorate for Christmas that are also dangerous, “Poinsettias are toxic, raisins in Mince pies, and lilies are a very common centrepiece, and they like to chew on them, but they can be very toxic to cats.”

It’s also not advised to let your cat or dog chew on your live or artificial tree.

“You don’t know what the tree has been chemically treated with for longevity. In the artificial trees, the ones with the built in lights, often times, cats will begin to chew on the wires and then they can end up with burnt tongues, or extrocuted or even shorting out your tree,” Pearl says.

She also recommends that you keep you dog out of the water below a live Christmas tree.
