The provincial government has introduced its climate change act that will take part of the gas tax that’s charged when you fill up and use that for climate change.
Environment Minister Serge Rouselle says there will be no new tax. The Executive-Director of the Conservation Council, Lois Corbett likes some of what’s in the legislation which includes enshrining in law targets for reducing pollution and annual reporting.
The legislation also adopts the federal government’s targets for large industrial emitters. If the targets are not met then the large emitters will have to pay and that revenue will go back to the province.
She would like to see incentives for building owners to become more energy efficient.
