NB Doctors Say Federal Tax Changes Could Impact Health Care

Proposed federal tax changes for small businesses have upset doctors in New Brunswick with some suggesting they will cut back hours, take early retirement or even leave the province.

As a result, the New Brunswick Medical Society believes the quality of health care could be affected.

President Dr. Lynn Murphy-Kaulbeck says doctors with their own practices don’t get many of the benefits the average worker receives.

“Physicians… who are on a fee-for-service model or a small business owner… get no paid vacation, no sick leave, no pension plan, no health benefits et cetera,” she notes.

Dr. Murphy-Kaulbeck is also critical of how the Trudeau government claims it is closing loopholes in the tax system when she adds those measures are actually legitimate ways to operate a practice.
