Johnson’s Mills Shorebird Reserve Expands

The Nature Conservancy of Canada has boosted its efforts to protect migratory shorebirds by purchasing more land around its Johnson’s Mills Interpretive Centre near Dorchester.

The shorebird reserve now totals more than 560 acres after the non-profit land conservation group bought an additional 32 acres.

The reserve features Acadian forest, Bay of Fundy shoreline and mudflats along with a provincially-significant salt marsh.

During late summer, thousands of shorebirds especially semi-palmated sandpipers stop to feed on the mudflats as they make a long migration from the Arctic to South America.

This project was supported by funding from the federal government, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service along with many individual donors.
