Riverview Residents Could Face Fines With Overgrown Lawn

Long grass is now a no-no in the Town of Riverview.

Town Councillors have voted in favour of an amendment to the traffic/parking and use of streets by-law. It now includes a reference to say that grass must be less than 20 centimetres tall on residential properties, and fines could be issued if it is not.

Spokesperson Meghan Walsh says this isn’t an unusual request, “It’s common for municipalities across Canada to have a by-law that pertains to long grass and unsightly premises, but enforcement will continue to be complaint driven. As we always have, we’ll send a courtesy notice to the homeowner before we try to intervene.”

After the homeowner has been contacted, if they don’t comply, they could be fined $50. If the issue has to go to court, they may be faced with a fine over a $1000.

Walsh adds, “In the past, the Town has received complaints from residents about unsightly grass, and in most cases a letter to the homeowners has been enough to rectify the problem.”
