New Data Driven Approach To Crime Statistics Helps Codiac RCMP See How They Measure Up

A new data driven approach to reporting crime statistics is helping Codiac RCMP measure their success.

Superintendent Paul Beauchesne credits Codiac Regional Policing Authority board member Vicki Squires with driving this initiative.

“And with her background, she brought sort of a new perspective in terms of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs),” says Beauchesne. “And I think they’re telling a better story, or at least one that’s at least more understandable and a little bit more transparent.”

He says this is a sea change in the way they handle data because “police systems are not based to give statistics for the types of questions that the [Codiac Regional Policing] Authority is asking me, so we have to find a way to be able to develop those, to be able to track those.”

Beauchesne adds this is about more than just data gathering in Codiac’s jurisdiction and “there’s an importance to it, not only for the Authority, but for the public there has got to be a reason behind it because there are some investments that have to be made and time to be able to get that information.”

Beauchesne adds these new statistics will also allow them to see how they stack up with other municipalities and police forces across Canada.
