Opposition Health Critic Calls Cleary Firing, $720K Settlement ‘Abuse of Power’

An abuse of power is how the Opposition health critic characterizes what has gone on with former provincial chief medical health officer Dr. Eilish Cleary, who was fired and was reportedly paid $720,000 in severance.

That information came to light after CBC Radio-Canada took the province to court over the refusal to disclose it.

Fredericton West Hanwell MLA Brian Macdonald tells Acadia Broadcasting you only pay out that kind of money if you made the mistake.

“The government of New Brunswick fired Dr. Cleary…without any good reason, and so as a result the taxpayers of New Brunswick have to pay three-quarters of a million dollars. And part of that settlement is to force Dr. Cleary to shut up, that’s part of the settlement, she’s not allowed to discuss it,” Macdonald tells us.

“They’ve been covering it up, they continue to cover up and the reality is there’s not much we can do to force them to not cover it up. That’s why it’s an abuse of power.”

Macdonald would still like to know why Dr. Cleary was fired in the first place.
