Early Education And Open Communication The Key For Parents When Discussing Drug Use

As parents, is there a way we can protect our kids from drug use?

Many are exposed by middle school, with experimentation as early as age 13.

Counselling Therapist at the Atlantic Wellness Community Centre Jason Jones says early education is a first step, “Before your child goes into middle school, I’d be having those conversations. Secondly, if they are already starting to experiment, connect them with an adult they feel comfortable in discussing that with. If they’re okay discussing it with mom or dad, help your child to find a better choice. Instead of shaming them, or guilting them or being disappointed in them, try to understand why they are doing it, and try to find an alternative solution.”

Jones says it can be difficult to tell if you child is using drugs. Some of the signs and symptoms may be losing interest in the things they used to like to do, changing their friend groups, or they maybe they’re tired or irritable, but he notes, “Those can also be things your child may experience just because they’re growing up.”

He says open communication is the key.
