A fire in a duplex on Brevet Street in North Moncton has left four people temporarily homeless.
Moncton firefighters arrived on scene at around 9pm tonight, to find a lot of fire coming from three sides of the building..
Platoon Chief Brian Gaudet says, “One of the challenges was there was so much fire that it was melting the siding on neighbouring homes. We had some concerns with potential exposure there. The fire was also extending through the rear wall of the building and up into the eaves, and we eventually had fire into the attic as well.”
Residents on one side of the duplex were notified by neighbours up the street of fire coming from the back deck area, and they managed to get out safely. The other residents were not home at the time of the fire.
Gaudet says the cause of this fire is going to take some time because there is extensive damage to three sides of the building.
Firefighters managed to get the blaze under control within an hour, but Gaudet says it took a lot of work, “The building is still standing and the neighbouring structures are still in good shape. What we saw when we arrived on scene, we couldn’t have predicted that.”
Eighteen firefighters helped to battle the blaze. Gaudet says he called for an additional engine, “I was at Church and Mountain Road when I got the call, and I could see smoke in the sky as I was coming up Mountain Road.”
Gaudet says, “It took a lot of hard work by firefighters, and we managed to get this fire under control and saved a portion of this building, and it was really outstanding work by the firefighters on scene.”
Fire investigators will return to Brevet Street tomorrow morning to try and figure out a cause.
