Federal Gov’t Unveils $75M Seniors Pilot Project

New Brunswick will be the test province for new research initiatives aimed at better understanding the impacts of aging on the population.

The federal government is funding the $75 million Healthy Seniors Pilot Project over a three year period.

Federal health minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor says Canadians are living longer than ever before and those over 65 years of age now outnumber those under the age of 15.

She adds says New Brunswick is ideal for this research with a small population, both linguistic groups, urban and rural areas and many indigenous communities.

The pilot project will involve finding solutions such as helping seniors remain safely in their own homes and encouraging healthy lifestyles.

Starting in July, funding for research projects will be made available for government and non-governmental groups.
