Province Boosts Program Tackling Mental Health Through Team Approach

The Gallant government putting $6 million towards a program that originated in Moncton having been adapted from a model in the Netherlands.

FACT has teams of 13 medical professionals helping patients with significant mental health problems between the ages of 18 and 65.

Premier Gallant says the experience of 70 patients was tracked at the launch of the pilot program and then followed up two years later.

“It was actually reduced by almost 50 per cent in terms of how many times the 70 patients under the FACT program has to be hospitalized, that is a significant gain,” Gallant says. “It means that the 70 patients were getting the support that they needed.”

FACT stands for Flexible Assertive Community Treatment teams.

The model recognizes resiliency and approaches recovery as a process with ups and downs.
