Cancer Survivors To Relay For Research At Centennial Park

An annual national event that raises awareness and funds for cancer research, will be held on Saturday, June 9th.

Hundreds of cancer survivors along with those who have been affected by cancer take part in the Relay for Life.

That includes 35 year old Melanie Bastarache who was first diagnosed in 2006 with Hodgkins Lymphoma. She was cancer free for around eight years, “I had a relapse, but I don’t have any treatments, so I am doing fine, and I am keeping my fingers crossed.”

Bastarache has been participating in the relay since 2007.

“At the event, the survivors have yellow shirts and they do the first lap around the track. After that, all teams start walking and relaying. Then there is a luminary ceremony in honour of those who had cancer and survived, or those who battled cancer and have passed.”

The Relay for Life goes from 6pm until midnight tomorrow at Centennial Park..

“Cancer touches everyone. It does not discriminate by age, gender, or social class. Everyone knows someone who has cancer. It can be friends, neighbours, family members or coworkers and I truly believes that every little bit helps.”
