The Greater Moncton SPCA is once again being overrun by kittens.
Director of Animal Welfare Nanette Pearl says this happens every spring, because it is a breeding season…and many people come and drop the fur babies off, in the hopes they’ll be adopted..
“We have them come in, in some creative ways from laundry baskets to pillow cases full of kittens and mother cats that are full of kittens. We also have people call us to say that the kittens have been born under their shed, and they ask for the SPCA to come and get them,” Pearl says.
Pearl says they are currently running out of space, “We have space for about 100 cats, and then when they come in with litters and mothers, we can go up to about 120 to 130. we are at around 90 per cent capacity right now.”
She says the SPCA has one request for those who are planning on dropping their kittens off at the shelter, “We cannot adopt them until they are eight weeks of age, so please hang onto them until they are at least eight weeks of age. It’s not a great place for a kitten to be in a kennel for two or three weeks, waiting for a chance to go up for adoption.”
