More People In The Province Relying On Food Banks

It appears as though the number of New Brunswickers using food banks is on the rise.

Last year, Food Depot Alimentaire entered into an agreement with the New Brunswick Association of Food Banks.

FDA President Dale Hicks says they have seen a significant increase in the amount of food coming into their facility since then, “In the final ten months of 2017, there was 675, 000 pounds of food come in to our warehouse. Just the first three months of this year, we have seen 475, 000 pounds of food.”

He says, “The New Brunswick Association Of Food Banks just got some recent information that says in the province, there are around 25, 000 families that are going to food banks. That is up from the last information they received that was at around 20, 000. A lot of it is working poor people who are just trying to make ends meet, but have qualified to go to food banks, so there has been an increase across the province, so hence the need has gone up.”

The FDA recently requested 400, 000 in funding from the federal and provincial governments to expand their warehouse in the Caledonia Industrial Park.
