Women who work in transition houses are doing difficult and important work in the community and they deserve better pay according to the New Brunswick Coalition for Pay Equity.
Coalition executive director Johanne Perron says interveners make about $13.40 per hour which is among the lowest paid in Canada.
“If expecting an 11 per cent increase, it would come to about $14.75 an hour. But real pay equity would be above $20 an hour in 2018,” she notes.
The provincial government has boosted the budgets for transition houses by 11 per cent this year and Perron hopes this opportunity will be used to increase the wages of their workers.
