Advanced care paramedics were first introduced in New Brunswick about a year ago in Moncton, Saint John and Bathurst.
The pilot program proved to be so successful, the provincial government is making it permanent and is adding Fredericton as a fourth site.
Ambulance NB spokesperson Eric Beairsto says advanced care paramedics have additional medications and interventions at their disposal to treat critical care patients.
“Bathurst will remain a 12-hour day shift. Moncton and Saint John will transition into 24 hours and we are going to open up Fredericton for a 12 hour day shift,” he notes.
Beairsto says dozens of paramedics in the province are not practicing at the advanced care level but would like to.
Currently there are 16 practicing advanced care paramedics.
