Facebook privacy is now top of mind for many of us after the unsettling revelations surrounding the Cambridge Analytica scandal in which 50 million Facebook users had their data exposed.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says we need internet giants to assume the responsibilities that come with the power they wield.
Speaking in Sussex, N.B., this week, Trudeau says this is something he’s brought up directly in meetings with Facebook over the last couple of years.
“There needs to be an understanding of the responsibility that comes with the influence that they have over our daily lives and indeed as we’ve seen over our democratic systems and our electoral processes.”
Trudeau says over the past couple of years as a country, we’ve been working hard on strengthening our electoral processes and protections.
He says they’ll continue to use social media as a way of connecting people and getting messages out but they will always do it responsibly.
