The leader of the provincial Green Party is critical of the Liberals Throne Speech, saying it doesn’t include enough steps to increase timely access to healthcare.
David Coon says many constituents have spoken to him detailing frustrations over excruciatingly long wait times.
“To receive an MRI, to see a neurologist, to receive mental healthcare, and to find a healthcare provider, all the while their health deterioriates,” says Coon. “There’s many things this government could do, Mr. Speaker, and the Throne Speech indicates very little.”
He acknowledges budgetary constraints, but says ending corporate welfare would enable more spending on healthcare.
Coon blasted a Gallant government decision earlier this year to give TD Bank a $6.8 million forgivable loan.
“A bank with a trillion dollars in assets, that made $2.8 billion in profits in its third quarter,” says Coon. “There are no words to describe the iniquity of subsidizing a bank, while New Brunswickers wait and wait while their health deteriorates.”
Coon says there isn’t enough detail in the Liberal Throne Speech about how the government will help youth stay in New Brunswick.
He admits while some young people leaving is natural, he’s concerned many have left because they feel there is no future in this province.
“It hasn’t helped that young New Brunswickers have lost $10.5 million in Education and Tuition Tax Credits, or $22.4 million in Tuition Rebates, or $2 million in changes to the Timely Completion Benefits,” continues Coon.
He says we should not be forcing young people to pay interest on the money they need to get an education.
