Canada Post Union Issues Strike Notice

Canadians are being told to brace for a potential interruption in postal services.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers has issued a 72-hour strike notice to Canada Post and said rotating strikes will begin on Monday if no settlements are reached before then.

The two sides have been negotiating for the last 10 months without any success.

Key demands for the union include job security, an end to forced overtime and overburdening, better health and safety measures, service expansion and equality for rural and suburban mail carriers.

“Our members gave us a clear mandate to take job action if Canada Post refused to address our major issues,” Mike Palecek, the national president of CUPW, said in a statement on Tuesday.

“Our goal is still negotiated settlements with no postal disruption. This week is Canada Post’s chance to make that happen.”

The union also wants Canada Post to address workplace injuries, which it said have increased by 43 per cent over the last two years.

CUPW said it is still determining where the strikes could take place.
