Many companies already have drug and alcohol policies for their employees and some may have added cannabis to that policy given that recreational use becomes legal this week.
McInnes Cooper lawyer Lucie Laboissonniere says if such policies don’t exist, she believes companies should consider getting one.
“The policy should fit within their particular industry and is hopefully also reviewed by legal counsel.”
She says it’s best practice for companies to have that road map in place.
Without a drug and alcohol policy, she adds companies may face challenges trying to deal with individual cases of their employees.
