Moncton Sees Above Average Rainfall Amounts In January

January was a wet month in the Moncton region, due to a combination of snow and rain.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Ian Hubbard says just over 77 centimetres of snow fell last month in the region, while the average is around 78 centimetres.

Rainfall amounts, on the other hand, were around 85 per cent higher.

We saw over 52 millimetres, whereas the normal amount is around 29.

Hubbard says we have had milder temperatures overall, “One thing I have noticed about the tracks of many of the storms we have had over the past month, they have been tracking to the West of Moncton. When that happens, the warm air comes right in over the city. Once that low passes, the cold air flows in behind it.”

That can sometimes result in a flash freeze.

We have started out February with milder temperatures, and then things have cooled down, to cause water on roads to freeze.

In January, we saw several snow days off for the students, as a result of both snowy conditions and icy conditions.

Hubbard says they are monitoring another storm system this week, that is expected to arrive on Wednesday evening or Thursday. It is expected to bring significant snowfall amounts for Southern New Brunswick.
