Atlantic Wildlife Institute Says Turtle Species Need To Be Protected In NB

With a rising number of turtle sightings at this time of year, the Atlantic Wildlife Institute is issuing a reminder to anyone who may see them.

Spokesperson Pam Novak says there are three species, the snapping turtle, painted turtle and wood turtle, “We need to realise that we are dealing with very sensitive species here. Their habitat protection is very important and to not mess with their egg laying abilities right now is very important because we need to protect those next generations. Folks should also realise that out of the three species, two are at risk, which means we are losing their numbers and we are losing them fast. The snapping turtle is considered of special concern, so it is just making the list where it is being monitored more. The wood turtle is actually considered to be threatened, which means it is only one step away from being endangered.”

The month of June is egg laying season for the turtles.
