School Zone Speed Limit On Agenda At Anglophone East District Education Council Meeting

Members of the Anglophone East District Education Council will meet tonight, and school zone speed limits will be discussed.

This comes after Transportation Minister Bill Fraser turned down a request to have the speed limit reduced to 50 kilometres in front of Magnetic Hill School.

Councillor Angela Lawson says she is hoping they can push the Minister to change his mind, “My intention is to ask my fellow Councillors to support us writing a letter to the Minister asking that they stop passing this issue around and somebody take responsibility for the issue. We are certainly concerned about student safety and we will definitely be pushing the Department of Transportation and the Minister of Education to do what is right for our students. I will also be asking for a copy of these reports that allude to it being more safe to leave the speed limit at 70 kilometres an hour, then to lower it.”

Karen DeGrace, who has a daughter at the school, launched a petition in May, asking for the speed limit to be lowered to 50 km/h. The Transportation Minister then met with Principal Nick Smith and the Head of the Parent School Support Committee, Mark Steeves earlier this month.
