Fire Damages Duplex On Mountain Road

A fire in a duplex at the corner of Mountain Road at Botsford Street has left nine people temporarily homeless.

Moncton Fire Platoon Chief Brian Gaudet says they arrived on scene at 73 Mountain Road at round 8 last night, after reports of a kitchen fire, “We found heavy fire in the kitchen area, which is towards the back of the second floor, and the rest of the floor was completely full of smoke.”

Gaudet says they also conducted salvage operations, “There is fire and water damage unfortunately, but we believe we minimized the damage from the water, at least on the first floor by using the tarps and other tools to preserve their belongings.”

Canadian Red Cross was contacted, but Gaudet says the tenants all opted to stay with friends for the night.

The cause is believed to be a pot that was left on the stove unattended. Gaudet says this fire serves as a reminder about how important it is to keep a close eye on things when you are cooking, “You shouldn’t leave anything on the stove unattended. Sometimes people will leave a pot on the stove and leave the room whiole they are waiting for it to boil, but a fire could be the result. In this case, the wrong burner was turned on, and a fire started.”
