Keep The Moncton Fire Departments Wreaths Green

You may have noticed the wreaths hanging on each of the Moncton Fire departments, with the green light bulbs.

Acting Chief Don McCabe says they are more than just a Christmas decoration, “It’s a program called Keep the Wreaths Green. We hangs wreaths at every fire station full of green lightbulbs. For the month of December we want everyone to have a safe and happy Christmas. Everytime we have a residential fire in the month of December, we put a red bulb there.”

McCabe says, currently there is one red bulb after a small fire on High Street on Saturday morning.

He says they have had other fires, but they were commercial, and the bulbs are only changed to red for residential fires..

Residents must take extra precautions during this time of year as accidents are more likely to occur as we untangle Christmas lights, light candles and sit around the fire.

Here are some useful fire prevention tips:

  • Don’t put Christmas trees in front of an exit door or heaters.
  • Make sure extension cords are in good shape and properly secured.
  • Don’t hang Christmas stockings from the mantel when the fireplace is in use.
  • Never leave a fire unattended and clean the ashes regularly.
