Building is booming in Moncton especially in the downtown core and the city has almost $49 million worth of building permits to prove it.
The four month core construction season which ended in late October shows a substantial jump of 69 percent in commercial permits over last year.
City officials say some of the larger projects include a new Good Life gym on Vaughan Harvey, a new Zio’s restaurant at Mountain and Church, and a new Dolma Foods on St. George.
Outside the downtown, Organigram is making an addition, a new FERO waste building is going up and a new shopping plaza is being built at Morton and McLaughlin.
Despite a boom on the commercial side, residential permits are actually down by 21 percent.
Institutional permits are also down by 73 percent despite three notable projects, renovations at Sunny Brae Baptist Church and the Assomption Cathedral along with a new sleep clinic at the Dumont Hospital.
The city says year-to-date figures are at $212 million which includes almost $92 million for the downtown centre – up substantially over last year which stood at $118 million.
