Jonathan Creek Culvert Replacement Project Nearing Completion

The end is near for a temporary stop light on West Main Street in Moncton and four lanes of traffic should be moving through the area by mid-December.

The City of Moncton says work is wrapping up on a large construction project which began this summer to replace a culvert on Jonathan Creek.

Engineering design and construction director Alcide Richard says this multi-million dollar endeavour will modernize the system and most importantly alleviate flooding problems.

“We’ve taken a culvert and probably tripled its capacity. We’ve completely realigned the culvert from where it was. We’re completely doing a brand new gate structure and control structure for the water level in Jones Lake,” he notes.

Richard expects water will be flowing through the culvert soon but several delays in obtaining the control gates for Jones Lake mean that portion won’t be completed until January.

CN Rail is also replacing a culvert under a rail crossing further downstream in conjunction with this project.
