Keep Your Pets Cool On Hot And Humid Days

Dogs and cats are no different from humans, when it comes to a hot summer day.

Executive Director of the Greater Moncton SPCA Dave Rogers says “If it’s hot for us, It’s hot for them too.”

If you are taking your dog for a walk, Rogers explains, “Dogs and cats don’t sweat like we do, they sweat through their tongue. They expel heat that way. If you are bringing a water bottle along on your walk, and your stop to take a drink, you need to understand that they will need a drink too.”

Before taking your dog for that walk, feel the asphalt with your hand. If it hurts, it is too hot for your dog to be out for a walk too. “The pads on their feet are very sensitive. They’re like the palm of your hand,” he notes.

Rogers says, “If they’re going to be out playing in the backyard make sure they have a shady spot to take a break, lie down and get out of the direct sun.”
