Plans could announced this fall about a YMCA for the North end of the city.
CEO for the Greater Moncton YMCA Zane Korytko says they have been working with the City and the Citizens Committee for close to 3 years on the potential for a centre, and they are very close to a Memorandum of Understanding, “We’ve already sent a draft version of the Memorandum to the City. They are looking at it now, and we expect to get it back between now and the end of August. Then we’ll have some internal discussions at the Y, go back and forth and we’re hoping by mid to late fall, there will be an announcement made.”
A feasibility study was done last year, that asked residents for their input.
Korytko says if everything goes smoothly, they’re hoping to make an official announcement in mid to late fall, “We’ll go into a design phase which doesn’t take too long. We looking at somewhere in the neighbourhood between 25 to 35, 000 square feet. To build that type of building, it should take around 18 months would be my guess.”
