Big Brothers, Big Sisters Of Greater Moncton Facing Closure Without Financial Help

Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Greater Moncton is in big financial trouble.

The agency provides mentoring programs for youth but desperately needs to raise $90, 000 in the next few months or could be forced to close.

Executive director Peter MacDonald says the organization receives little financial help from government and must rely almost solely on donations.

“We have a great brand, we have a great name and we’ve been here for a long time, but the reality is, 90 per cent of our funding comes directly from fundraising,” he notes.

MacDonald says there is still a great need in the community for Big Brothers, Big Sisters and notes how over the last three years, the number of youth served has doubled, “That has increased the cost burden that has been put on us as a public service agency, and we haven’t been able to sustain it.”

But the problem is getting money from fundraising, “It’s tough right now to get any money through fundraising, and it’s getting tougher. We’ve been having a hard time getting our name and our need out there,” he notes.
