The federal government wants to know how Canada can continue to grow through immigration and a series of roundtables are benign held across the country to find out.
Immigration Minister John McCallum took part in a discussion in Moncton with a group of stakeholders including employers.
McCallum says business people are telling him welcoming more newcomers may be the answer since they are often desperate for workers.
“They (employers) have so many vacancies that they cannot fill. We heard that from trucking companies, we heard that from Irving, we heard that from just about all of the employers,” McCallum notes.
McCallum adds if enough workers can’t be found for a company, it is no longer viable.
Ottawa has promised Atlantic Canada will receive at 2,000 immigrants next year plus their families in a pilot project which aims to keep them here.
