New Brunswick is one of the 4 Canadian provinces with the dubious distinction of having the highest melanoma rates. In 2015, there were twice as many cases in New Brunswick as Quebec for every 100 thousand people.
Associate Professor Dr. Annette Korner of McGill University’s Oncology Department says detecting an infected mole early is essential because there’s no cure for late stage melanoma.
Dr. Korner says you should be looking for moles that are asymmetrical, large, fuzzy, if it has several colours or one that looks different from the rest which is referred to as the ugly duckling effect.
