Volunteers Needed For Weekday Shifts At Peter McKee Community Food Centre

The Peter McKee Community Food Centre is putting out the call for more volunteers.

Manager Ben MacMichael says they have a big task ahead of them, and more helping hands will help them achieve their goals.

MacMichael says they currently have about 6 to 7 people per shift and are looking to double that number.

“We have two shifts right now that we run Monday to Friday, and then we have an evening shift one night a week on Wednesday,” says MacMichael. “During each of those shifts we’re looking to have roughly 10 volunteers on hand, and if we even had a couple more, 12, that would make us even run smoother.”

MacMichael says the hours are Monday to Friday, a morning shift from 9 to 12:30, and the afternoon shift is 12:30 to 4. The evening shift is only Wednesday nights from 4 to 7.

He says they need people for a variety of positions, including greeting and helping families.

“Then we have those who just want to do some working and lugging,” says MacMichael. “We have groceries that come in on big orders, they need to be broken down, and made into individual food packets and stacked on the shelves accordingly.”

He says there are two straightforward steps before you can volunteer, including filling out a registration form and a criminal background check.

MacMichael says it’s increasingly common for non profits to have background checks done.
