Hundreds of family, friends and fans gathered today at Detroit’s Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament to say a final goodbye to Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe.
Gordie’s youngest son, Dr. Murray Howe gave the eulogy.
Murray said his Dad was a selfless man who never accepted credit for any of his accomplishments.
He says his dad credited God, his family, his friends, coaches, trainers, his teammates and never had a bad thing to say about anyone, except referees.
Murray said during his fathers final days he told him he hoped there is a good hockey team in heaven, to which Murray replied “once you join the team, they won’t just be good, they will be great”.
Even after his father suffered a stroke, Murray said he was the kind of man who would still help elderly ladies unload their grocery cart.
Murray said one of his favourite memories he shared with his Dad was visiting his hometown of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
He says one of the greatest parts of the trip was when his son, Corey, met a girl and is now living in Saskatoon.
Unfortunately we lost the greatest hockey player ever today, but more importantly the nicest man I have ever met. (1/2)
