It’s World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

A seniors advocate in New Brunswick says we need to ensure the elderly are properly cared for and not being taken advantage of.

Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

Cecile Cassista says this is a an issue that needs to be addressed on more than just one day a year, “Seniors are very vulnerable, and can be very lonely, especially those that live alone, and isolated. That is a huge piece that we really need to work on. If you live in a community and you know a senior lives next door, reach out to that senior and be that partner to help them along.”

Cassista says sometimes all it takes, is checking to see if they are in need of assistance, or just giving them a friendly face to talk to.

She says another big issue is financial abuse. She receives calls on a regular basis with reports of seniors who have been the victims of fraud.
