Downtown Moncton Centreville Inc Working To Improve Safety In Downtown Core

The Executive Director of the Downtown Moncton Centreville Inc is concerned about the safety of people in the downtown.

Anne Poirier Basque says have started an Ambassador program.

“And that’s in partnership with By-Law Enforcement Officers, and also ReConnect,” says Poirier Basque. “So these two ambassadors are going to be out there looking to make sure there are more eyes and ears on the street.”

She adds they are also working to improve the safety of the CN Subway, because it’s going to be conduit to the new Downtown Centre.

“We’d like to see more lighting there, we’d like to see something a little bit better as a passageway in order for it to be more friendly to people that are going to be walking,” says Poirier Basque.

She adds it’s important to ensure people feel safe in their own downtown.

“Discussions have already started with the RCMP, with By-Law Enforcement, with community organizations,” says Poirier Basque. “We’re looking at that now in view of 2018 or 2019, whenever the centre opens.”

DMCI President Derek Martin says their goal of creating a vibrant downtown community will help with safety by giving people a sense of pride in their downtown.
