Moncton City Council Increase Pay

Moncton City Councillors approved a new compensation formula for next year at their Council meeting.

The decision means Councillors are looking at a new salary of a little over $33,000 a raise of almost $9,000.

The Mayor’s salary will increase by $14,000 to just shy of $84,000 a year, and the Deputy Mayor’s salary will increase by $8,000 to $37,000 per year.

Mayor George LeBlanc believes being a Councillor is not truly a part time job with members working very long hours.

“You can work mornings and afternoons, and nights and weekends,” says LeBlanc. “It’s a very, very demanding job. I suspect that like the Mayor’s job it tends to grow and encompass a tremendous amount of time, perhaps to the point where it’s a full time basis.”

The new compensation package was narrowly passed, with Councillors Brian Hicks, Paul Pellerin, Dawn Arnold, Daniel Bourgeois and the Mayor himself voting against it.
