After this week’s rock collapse at Hopewell Rocks, safety is a top priority.
General Manager Noel Hamann says before the tourism attraction opens in May, they take the time to ensure that all of the rock formations are intact. Loose rock pieces are shaved off, and any formations that could be unsafe, are roped off.
But at this time of year, when they are not open, it’s at your own risk, “In your off season, there is an unpredictability to it, but there are plenty of warnings and I feel that people don’t end up on the ocean floor in the winter by accident. The stairs are removed and there are cautionary signs and our website is full of warnings and suggestions. When we are not open,we do not encourage people to go down there because there are risks.”
Hopewell rocks will open for the season on May 20th.
