The provincial government is investing $600,000 to improve dementia care at nursing homes in the province.
New Brunswick is among the provinces with the highest rates of antipsychotic medication use for the elderly for treatment of dementia.
The government wants to change that.
Social Development Minister Cathy Rogers says they are investing in finding ways for intervention without using medication, to help manage the behavioural and psychological symptoms of the disease.
Funding will be used to teach health-care providers how to identify those who may benefit from non-drug therapies.
15 nursing homes will participate in the project, and it will be expanded provincewide next year.
