The old Moncton High has been sitting empty for years, but in the last couple of months plans for the 80 year old historic building have come to light.
Earlier this week, we heard that there were hopes the Moncton Public Library, and the Atlantic Ballet Theatre, along with a couple of other would move in.
But yesterday, U-Haul announced that it has bid to turn the school into a storage facility and retail store.
Moncton Centre MLA Chris Collins says, “It’s great that businesses are showing interest in the building, but, I don’t think it would be a good fit for historical properties and I don’t think that heavy truck traffic in that neighbourhood would be a good idea for the east end of Moncton. I certainly wouldn’t support that proposal.”
A feasibility report on the proposal to move the Moncton Library is expected to come before city council in the near future.
Collins says, “I believe this this is the right decision for the city. I believe it is the right decision for the building, and it is the right decision for the library itself.”
He says the next step in this process is to get approval to move the library so that rent can be included in the library’s business plan. Then move forward with presenting that business plan to the provincial government.”
