Makeup of New Council On Aging Announced

The names of those people from around the province who will serve on the Council on Aging have been announced by the provincial government. Their job will be to develop a strategy for getting older in New Brunswick.

The President of the Canadian Medical Association Dr. Cindy Forbes says we’re spending $2.3-billion a year unnecessarily keeping seniors in hospitals when they should be elsewhere, preferably in their own homes. She advocates spending money on care in the community.

The Council on Aging includes two Saint John appointees: Cindy Donovan who is the Chief Executive Officer at Loch Lomand Villa and Anne Marie Gillis, who chairs the Board at the Saint John Multicultural and Newcomers Resource Centre.

Ken McGeorge of Fredericton and Suzanne Dupuis-Blanchard of Dieppe will be the co-chairs.

Social Development Minister Cathy Rogers says the province is facing a big challenge, balancing the needs of an aging population whose numbers are growing with the rising costs of care.
